Women in jewelry making: A shift from a tradition
Leela and Laxmi at local jewelry
workshop, Hetauda

In partnership with RUPP, some women of Hetauda municipality have presented an example by involving themselves in the work, which is normally carried out by men in the country i.e. Jewelry Making. Under the support and facility of RLL, RUPP provided intensive training on making of gold and silver jewelry to 5 women. It is learnt from a study that 80 % of the skilled workers in jewelry making in Nepal are from India. Therefore, by training and upgrading the occupational skills of Sunar (an occupational caste working in jewelry making), it would be a step forward in gaining certain percentage of the labour market in jewelry making with a supply of domestic employees. On the other hand, it also helps increase self-employment.

Ms. Leela Sunchari and Ms. Laxmi B. K. think there is no such work, which is only done by men. They asked a question, "Why women cannot make jewelry when they can wear them so happily?" The trained women today are employed in different workshops for further upgrading of their skills. They are determined to open a jewelry workshop of their own in the - future.
